I received a phone call at work this week that no one wants to receive. My sister, Brenda, was on the phone and told me that my step-mom could not wake up my Dad. As I cried and spoke to her, several co-workers came over to my desk, as they heard my end of the desperate conversation. I was asking my sister if I should go to the hospital, or to his house. There were so many necessary items to complete like making phone calls, gathering photos, purchasing attire for the funeral, ordering flowers and creating a program. While our family comprises a large group, a few people completed all of these tasks, leaving those few with little sleep, no time to think, process and grieve. If more people had assisted, the time factor would not have felt so demanding. Those that contributed their time to accomplish everything have furthered their trustworthiness in my eyes. The way people structure and utilize their time shows where their priorities are and it sends a message in regards to the relationship (Burgoon et al., 2010, p. 326). The lack of consideration was a violation of the rules of consideration.
The role of nonverbal communication is an important aspect of human communication behavior (Segrin, 1993). Overall my observations were positive with a few surprises. Family members and friends are people that you should be able to consider trustworthy, my family and friends are no exception.
