Effective teachers can establish a well-managed classroom and empower students through the evidence-based practices of positive behavior support using scientific and artistic methods. Such evidence-based classroom practices as compiled in the Effective Classroom PBS Plan include creating a classroom community, maximizing structure and predictability, posting and teaching expectations, and using a continuum of strategies to acknowledge appropriate or inappropriate behavior some of which may be proactive or reactive. Teachers who are not empowering the students are likely engaged in practices that are ineffective resulting in the opposite effect of disempowerment. The rules need to be established from the beginning of the school year in order to prevent loss of instruction or negative effects on student achievement (IRIS, 2014). Classroom rules based on researched practices include rules that will mirror the school wide expectations, rules that are measureable and observable, and rules that are positivity stated (Kerr & Nelson, 2010). For this portion of the behavior management plan to be effective, the rules must be taught, reviewed, monitored, and reinforced (Kerr & Nelson, 2010). An excellent method for teaching the rules to students would be to incorporate modeling and role-playing (Kerr & Nelson, 2010). The rules should be reviewed until all children have a clear understanding and then, periodically reviewed on a schedule set by the teacher that runs throughout the school year. Many times teacher feel a monthly review as well as an after break review are ideal times for the rule refresher. Using this continuum of strategies to acknowledge appropriate or inappropriate behaviors will help motivate students to behave. One highly effective, proactive strategy for use with the group or individual is teacher praise that consistently follows the desired behavior and states specifically what the desired behavior is (Kerr & Nelson, 2010). To be motivating, rewards should be personalized to each individual. All students will not be motivated by the same items. Another proactive strategy to help prevent undesired behaviors from occurring is giving students pre-corrects before an error occurs (Rock). When inappropriate behavior has already occurred, reactive strategies become necessary for punishment or extinction. One example of empowering students in this way is by use of the ACT REACT intervention to teach self-regulatory skills which can increase both academic and behavioral success (Rock). In considering consequences, be mindful that they should always preserve dignity and increase motivation resulting as part of the student empowerment
