From The Classroom To The Fire Station
The Euclid High School Fire Academy is a new career technical program offered to juniors. The Fire Academy is a rigorous program. Mr. Padley the instructor of the programs says that “students receive training and instruction on a wide variety of both firefighting and emergency medical care topics. These include fire service organization & safety, fire behavior, personal protective equipment, self-contained breathing apparatus, fire extinguishers, tools & equipment, ropes & knots, forcible entry techniques, ladders, water supply, fire attack, EMS systems, legal & ethical issues, communication & documentation, anatomy & physiology, airway management, CPR, patient assessment, bleeding control, splinting,

According to Mr. Padley, students that complete the program will receive certifications in American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider CPR/AED, National Incident Management System (NIMS) Incident Command System (ICS) 100, 200, 700, & 800 through the Federal Emergency Management Association (FEMA), Ohio Firefighter I, Ohio Firefighter II, Nationally Registered Emergency Medical Technician - Basic, Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT) Operations, HAZMAT Awareness, and Certified Emergency Vehicle Operator (CEVO). The rigorousness of this program prepares students for a tough, but rewarding career as an firefighter. Current Firefighter/Paramedic and Euclid Alumni Marshaun Khan told me about life as a Firefighter. He said “As a Firefighter/Paramedic we respond to all types of emergencies. This can range from heart attacks and strokes to house fires and car accidents on the highway. Sometimes the emergency could be as simple as someone who locked themselves out of there home. As a Firefighter/Paramedic we constantly have to be ready for any type of emergency that can arise in our community. We don't control when the emergency calls come in. We have to be prepared to respond at any given moment.” Firefighters go through a lot of training. Marshaun said that “to become a Firefighter you have to go to school and obtain a Firefighter I and a Firefighter II, this can be done in approximately one semester. To become a Paramedic you must first be an EMT-BASIC. This takes one semester. Once that is obtained it takes about another year of schooling to obtain your EMT-PARAMEDIC.” Even though firefighter go through years of training and education their will always be dangers associated with firefighting.
