Regarding the statement, mom didn’t want to be attached to a bunch of machines and the family stating don’t tell anyone she signed forms on the last admission the nurse needs to look for advanced directives which would specify the patient wishes of medical treatment. The nurse should also look for documentation of DNR. If there is a DNR signed this legal document signed by both physician and the patient the nurse should follow the patient wishes for treatment. The patient is the nurse priority and since they are unable to make a competent decision for themselves, the nurse needs to respect human dignity and speak up for the patient and not ignore the statement by the family which allows the nurse to comply with the values and wishes of the patient. The nurse should notify the physician if there is an advanced directive or DNR documentation found in the patient medical record. If unable to resolve the ethical conflict with the family the doctor and nurse can refer to the ethics committees which the healthcare members can use when unable to resolve ethical conflicts on their own.
