Ethical Issues In Philadelphia Politics

That's never been easy in the rough-and-tumble of Philadelphia politics. It's harder than ever with the explosion of "new media": the Internet with its e-mail blasts and blogs, precision-targeted phone campaigns and micro-marketed cable TV ads. Just as Philadelphians can no longer tolerate the atmosphere of corruption that has so tarnished our city's image, we no longer will stand for campaigning that hurts our community and makes it difficult to work together after the election. Even with an entirely new set of candidates, the damage from the 2003 election still hasn't been repaired completely. …show more content…
The campaign is a true test of principles and leadership that tells voters better than position papers how the winner will govern. We are not nave about how strongly the candidates and their supporters feel about the election. Philadelphia needs a hard-hitting debate on the critical issues that face us in the next four years. But if we get campaigns that limit their focus to personalities or engage in serial character assassination, we'll have been badly cheated. Philadelphia has enough problems waiting for the next mayor. Healing the wounds inflicted through unethical campaigns shouldn't be one of

At the Jan. 20 meeting of the Northwest Indiana Regional Development Authority board, I presented my case for the creation of a trusteeship that would oversee the millions of dollars in casino revenue that are intended for the sole benefit of the citizens of East Chicago. While there will likely be opponents of this proposal, I make it in good faith -- but with a clear understanding of the unique history of the public corruption that has robbed the people of East Chicago of the benefits that other cities around Indiana have enjoyed since the state legalized riverboat gambling in the early 1990s. Allow me to explain why I believe creating a special trusteeship is necessary. In the years I have served as Indiana's attorney general and in the previous years I served in the office as chief deputy, I know well the years of litigation required to bring an end to the unholy deal struck by former Mayor Robert Pastrick and his political cronies that was approved by the Indiana Gaming Commission at the time.…

Wellstone, for example, was able to turn his strong supporters into dedicated volunteers, activists, and even leaders of his campaign. This bottom up approach allows a campaign to be more personable with individuals in their community and relay the candidates or organizations message to people in his or her community. Lofty argues that “direct voter contact is the most effective way to win a campaign. ”(85) As a consequence, gathering data on voters to determine the amount of votes that are needed to win a campaign is critical to the success model.…

In the county which I live here in North Carolina, we will soon be facing primaries for the county sheriff, the current Sheriff has held the position 2014, during that time there has been much controversy surrounding the man. His supporters choose to make excuses for his actions; county officials have chosen to overlook some of his misconducts, his staff is afraid of him. Recently the sheriff’s office was handed the responsibility of running our local animal control facility. The number of euthanized animals in our shelter are horrendous, despite the Sheriff’s office taking control, the numbers have not decreased, at a forum I attended today with all three of the candidates trying to get on the ticket, the issue of animal control was brought…

I would be hesitant to take the job, first of all, this scandal lasted for 15 years. Furthermore, the damage had been done. As a crisis management consultant, I would act as a leader and develop a crisis communication plan. Would get familiar with all my resources, and make sure the board of trustees is familiar as well. We would issue a public apology to the victims first, and then extend the apology to everyone else.…

However, Philly has gained a reputation for something else in recent years that have brought this nickname into a question; this city has become an example of rising gun violence, with constant shootings and multiple deaths. Every day and night, people are shot and often even killed for various and sometimes mysterious reasons. The city of brotherly love is in desperate need of more control of armed weapons, because gun violence has led to an increase in violence and deaths, weapons are too easy to obtain, and the police are being rendered powerless to stop the rising shootings. Throughout the years the amount of money that presidential candidates spend on their campaigns have tremendously increased. The amount of money that individuals and interests groups put towards these campaigns is a ridiculous amount, and political candidates have began a movement to increase the dependence on the expenses of television advertisements. Starting in 1971, the Revenue Act was established which is a publicly funded campaign for the presidential candidates.…

In Ecclesiastics Solomon wrote, "What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun" (Ecc.1:9, NIV). While surveying the historical presidential campaigns of George Washington, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, and modern day hopefuls, some tactics and strategies have changed, while other aspects are surprisingly quite similar. One difference is America's first three presidents did not personally campaign, rather political party newspapers, their media of the day, did both the debating of the issues and "mercilessly criticized their respective opposing candidates" on their behalf ("Thomas Jefferson: Campaigns and Elections"). Public opinion and the media held prominent roles in campaigning…

As usual our country is facing many issues from zika to gun control to clinton’s controversies. There is no shortage of action needed by congress. According to Tom Frieden, "Basically, we're out of money, and we need Congress to act to allow us to respond effectively. " All politics aside our citizens health is at risk, and our lawmakers need to take action to aid in the protection from this virus.…

The film Law and Disorder in Philadelphia exemplified high violence and crimes around the streets and in the neighborhood in Philadelphia. A theory for the high crime rate in Philadelphia could be from the result of distrust between the criminal justice system and the civilians. Since the destitute Philadelphia streets established itself to be a common placed for the drug trades, local police officers routinely encounter high rates of criminal activities and the local people strongly developed and shared some animosity toward the police officers. For those who live in these neighborhoods that persist in an impoverished state, its environment and its culture create many kind of strains which build greater stress and persistent social problems…

For my volunteer service, I chose the South Carolina Democratic Party to participate with. I was connected with Ernest Boston Jr. and Maria Reyes, two of the people there who supervised volunteers. My experience did not explicitly focus on campaigning, however. For the first few volunteer sessions that I attended, I was responsible for phone banking potential volunteers to assist in phone banking and canvassing. Closer to Election Day, I was responsible for phone banking voters in the Columbia area and making them aware of their options for voting, such as location, transportation, and early voting availability.…

There is a lot of controversy whether or not dirty hands are necessary for politics and brings a dilemma if one should partake in it or not. The “dirty hands” issue arises when a political leader is forced to make a choice in order to do something morally wrong in order to bring about a greater good of some sort. When someone is forced to choose between supporting an important moral principle or to avoid some sort of disaster there can be a lot of questions that may come up. This is why dirty hand politicians are necessary for some political decisions. In a paper written by Michael Walzer “Political Action: The Problem of Dirty Hands”, he describes an issue that occurs with dirty hands.…
