He stays frustrated and depressed from living the same unhappy life day after day with a woman who is a complete opposite of him. “Guess he’s been in Starkfield too many winters”, informed by an older local. Edith Wharton describes him as an attractive athletic farmer who seems to catch the attention of many women. Yet his wife, Zeena Frome, is described as a not so attractive woman who doesn’t seem to deserve Ethan. Then when Zeena’s cousin Mattie Silver comes to stay with the married couple for some time, Ethan makes his first character change. Mattie Silver is described as a young, beautiful, and vital woman. While Zenna makes Ethan feel imprisoned, Mattie brings sexual energy back into Ethan’s life. Mattie shows Ethan crazy attention, laughs at his jokes, communicates with Ethan, and gives him sexual looks unlike anything Zenna has ever done. Ethan was very aware of the feelings that he started to develop for Mattie, but with all the attention she shows him, he has no choice but to fall for her. I mean who wouldn’t, a beautiful girl showing you attention, giving you looks, and laughing at your jokes unlike the woman that you’re supposed to be married to. I feel like any man or woman would develop feelings for that person if their significant other wasn’t doing what they were doing. With the new and changed Ethan Frome being married to her cousin, Mattie knows that she can’t have a real relationship with her cousin’s husband. It’s just not right knowing that is your family. But she knows that she has feelings for Ethan and that Ethan has the same amount of feelings she has for him. Ethan is not the same frustrated, depressed, and dissatisfied farmer that he used to be now that he made a character change. Now he feels there’s hope for being happy in life but yet knows he is still imprisoned by his wife Zeena. So Mattie, with her strong feelings for Ethan, comes up with a proposal to set him free of Zenna’s shackles, they are both ready and willing to go through with it. However, this isn’t a normal asking her to marry him type proposal, but a Suicide proposal. Yes, a suicide proposal, as in taking your own life. These two being so blinded by each other's feelings for each other, and

An Analysis of Ethan Frome 's Predisposition to Defeat In Edith Wharton 's novel Ethan Frome, a crippling "smash up" coasting "accident" traps Ethan Frome and his wife Zenobia as well as his housemaid Mattie Silver in their bleak farmhouse for 24 years. Starkfield, a small city that has devastating winters, is where the story takes place. A city where anybody who lives there, does not have many opportunities. This can be seen in the book when Harmon Gow, an onlooker, says, "Guess he 's been in Starkfield too many winters.…

In Ethan Frome, author Edith Wharton illustrates that archetypal images are prominent in her novel through the characters of Mattie and Zenna, who show the struggle of Ethan Frome and his hardship of a decision of picking a girl. Mattie, Ethan’s love interest, is representative of summer, hope, warmth and the love that she has for Ethan. On the contrary Zeena, Ethan’s wife, represents winter, cold, everlasting, desolation, and a only half alive state of mind and being. Both of these characters are more than meets the eyes and influential to Ethan Frome, who has both of these women as prominent characters in his life. Mattie and Zeena contradict each other’s characters in the way that Mattie brings Ethan a sense of communication as much as…

Although Ethan does have physical and emotional troubles, the Engineer knows that Ethan’s main problem is intellectual. This gives the Engineer a more complete idea of Ethan’s story. Even though the Engineer is making up most of the story, the idea that Ethan Frome wants to improve himself intellectually is shown by the fact that he read the Engineer’s popular science literature. He knows that he did not know some of the things in the book and even admitted that science “used to” interest him (6). The Engineer thus found out something about Ethan Frome that Harmon Gow and Mrs. Hale could not, due to his…

In this scene of Edith Wharton’s novella Ethan Frome, he recalls his conversation with Mrs. Hale. Initially, this conversation provides Ethan some clarity about his ongoing internal conflict with his passions and obligations. In Ethan’s perspective, Zeena is becoming more of an unbearable burden, as she had become an “evil energy” that “had mastered him” (Wharton 50). Isolating him, Ethan looks to find comfort in Mattie, who has an emotional relationship.…

“The English Malady”, now known as hypochondria, was considered to be a “bizarre and contradictory [way to instill] irrationality” (Mullan 142). About 300 years later, hypochondria has changed from a disease to merely a side effect of social isolation. Throughout the novella, Ethan Frome, both Ethan and his wife, Zeena suffer from social isolation; however, the length and extent of this isolation affects them in different ways. Zeena suffers in a more obvious way, nagging for attention and having hypochondria, while Ethan suffers in a more subtle way, clinging onto any women that enter his life and having morbid thoughts when things don’t go as planned. Ethan and his wife live in the town of Starkfield, which is characterized by a lack of warmth,…

Throughout the book Ethan struggles against Zeena, the external conflict, and does what she wishes with only a small amount of resistance; this keeps up to the end of the book and Ethan grows to despise his wife “Zeena herself, from an oppressive reality, had faded into an insubstantial shade. All his life was lived in the sight and sound of Mattie Silver, and he could no longer conceive of its being otherwise” (Wharton 20). We don’t see a major change in the plot until Zeena makes the final choice to send Mattie off and Ethan makes sure he takes her to the train station. The historical fiction genre of the novel aptly captures Ethan’s morose circumstances, encompassed by irony. Edith Wharton constantly used irony in her novel to delineate her characters and the blatant misery in the plot. One of the ironies was when Ethan repeatedly saw Zeena’s face in the rocking chair while coasting; this instance is ironic because of how Ethan is deliberately coasting with Mattie to avoid Zeena, yet her face appears in front of him, demonstrating how he could never leave his stark reality in Starkfield. Another ironic instance was when Mattie mirrored Zeena’s locking the door in that rigid manner; this is ironic because of how Mattie, the only lively entity left in Ethan’s life, was becoming stark, silent, and serious like Zeena. Ethan Frome’s life was encompassed in such subtle moments of irony, or quirks of fate.…

In society today it is mostly seen that people have “everything” like a flat screen tv, an iphone, designer clothing, nice cars, and a big house, but yet they are still not happy.
