Their roots don’t go deep into the ground because of the layer of permafrost. Because the summer is short, the plants flower quickly. They tend to grow in groups for protection from the cold, and they have dark leaves and hairy stems. These characteristics help them to absorb the sun’s energy. Sometimes these plants that grow in tight groups for protection are called cushion plants.
The animals in the tundra have developed adaptations, or special traits, that help them survive in this harsh environment. The arctic hare, the arctic fox, and ermine live in the tundra, and the color of their fur changes from white in the winter to brown in the summer. This helps to camouflage them, or help them blend into their surroundings so predators can’t easily see them.
Polar bears can be found in the tundra during the summer months when they travel there to have their babies. You can even find seals and lemmings, who burrow under the snow during winter, in the tundra! Animals in the tundra typically have big feet so they are able to walk on snow. They also usually have small tails and ears so their bodies lose less heat when it’s
