Looking at the movie poster for the film Unfriended, it is clear that the creators want moviegoers to watch a new genre of horror, captivating them with cyber possession revenge. The poster features a drop down search menu with the name “Laura Barnes” and the word, possession and revenge appear. Above the search menu, there is a teenaged girl screaming with her face distorted on a screen with only darkness surrounding her. Underneath the search menu, in red text it says, “THIS APRIL REVENGE COMES ONLINE”. This movie poster might give too much of the plot away, but still leaves the viewers wanting to know what happened to Laura. It is far more serious when someone unfriends you on social media because it can cause irrevocable damage online and in real life. The creators of Unfriended know that teens and young adults know what unfriended means. They use that as the title to grab viewer’s attention, especially the social media users. Below the tile in red, capitalized font reads “THIS APRIL REVENGE COMES ONLINE”. The poster is informative about the release of the film, but add a sinister twist at the end of the tagline. In most horror films there is a monster or someone in a physical form doing the scary stuff, usually in a terrifying physical setting (dark forests, haunted asylums, cemeteries, etc.) but never online. This tagline is effective in persuading the viewers to watch this film, because now not only can ghosts or evil entities haunt you in real life but your virtual life too. Some people think horror movies are unoriginal and repetitive. This tagline offers a new danger that audiences haven’t been exposed to yet. In general, horror moviegoers would want to watch this movie because of it being a scary movie, yet the title and tagline appeal to a much broader audience when mentioning the online use of possession and
