Enrolling in college was not a decision that I took lightly, but is one of the most important decisions I have ever had to make. Taking college classes and working towards a degree is something I want to achieve. Attending college was a heated and an important part of my divorce decree. Recognizing the privilege that I have of being able to continue learning, achieving and stretching my limits is appreciated. Because of the fortunate circumstances that I have, to live in a country where I can attend college and have the same chance at success that everyone else has been one reason I enrolled in college. Meanwhile, my six children are watching to see what their mother makes from the dissolution of her marriage. Becoming an educated person also provides an opportunity to set an example of how to study, how to communicate, how to listen and how to be successful both in and out of college. Last Friday, Austin, my 16-year old son witnessed this first hand when he attended classes with me. By watching how I communicated with professors, completed homework, asked for help when needed and managed my time effectively, he began to connect the components together to see I am becoming a successful, educated person. The Meriam-Webster dictionary defines general education as, “A program of education intended to develop students as personalities rather than trained specialists and to transmit a common cultural heritage.” For example, Professor Norm Jones, USU’s director of General Education said, “Everyone takes it, the first 30-60 hours is when your personality starts to gel.” When taking general education requirements, students should view this as a time to explore and to find new interests. …show more content…
Having not been in a classroom for 26 years, I find I am unsure and like to stay within my comfort zone. By meeting the general education requirements, I will experience new settings, people, and thought processes that otherwise would be absent. This step is essential to becoming an educated person. Depth Education, “Is where students take courses that will take you out of your comfort zone and that are not necessarily in the chosen major and will keep you learning” This is where I will learn to connect disciplines to each other. For example, if my emphasis is English, I will take more Math and Science classes and vice versa. These are the classes that will give me skill sets specific to my declared discipline. In the video, The Structure of a College Education, Professor Jones says, “The major is the “stem” and other things grow from it”. Electives and Extracurricular activities may add to the major, but will definitely improve the quality of my educational experience. Participation in the co-curricular activities that take place within your department are critical to opening doors such as internships or potential career opportunities. In my declared major, Law and Constitutional Studies, we have already had the opportunity for a social and two guest speakers. By attending these events, I learn from firsthand sources in addition to making connections. Last week I had the good fortune to take my kids to the Homecoming concert, this allowed a very good example of how I bridge the path between home and becoming an educated
