Otter is a common name for a carnivorous mammal in the subfamily Lutrinae. The 13 extant otter species are all semiaquatic, aquatic or marine, with diets based on fish and invertebrates. Lutrinae is a branch of the weasel family Mustelidae, which also includes weasels, martens, minks, polecats, Eurasian and American badgers, honey badgers and wolverines.

Otters have long, slim bodies and relatively short limbs with webbed paws. Most have sharp claws on their feet and all except the sea otter have long, muscular tails. The 13 species range in adult size from 0.6 to 1.8 m (2.0 to 5.9 ft) in length and 1 to 45 kg (2.2 to 99.2 lb) in weight. The Oriental small-clawed otter is the smallest otter species and the giant otter and sea otter are the largest. They have very soft, insulated underfur, which is protected by an outer layer of long guard hairs. This traps a layer of air which keeps them dry

Prey-dependence leaves otters very vulnerable to prey depletion. Sea otters are hunters of clams, sea urchins and other shelled creatures.

Otters are active hunters, chasing prey in the water or searching the beds of rivers, lakes or the seas. Most species live beside water, but river otters usually enter it only to hunt or travel, otherwise spending much of their time on land to avoid their fur becoming waterlogged. Sea otters are considerably more aquatic and live in the ocean for most of their lives.

Otters are playful animals and appear to engage in various behaviors for sheer enjoyment, such as making waterslides and then sliding on them into the water. They may also find and play with small stones. Different species vary in their social structure, with some being largely solitary, while others live in groups – in a few species these groups may be fairly

Another group that is classified by the order Carnivora are the polar bears and sea otters. These animals have a more primitive structure of a paw or padded foot, and they are marginally aquatic because they can spend some time in water, but most of their time is spent on land. Many of these animals go into the water to eat, and they play a large role in maintaining marine ecosystems in regulating populations of prey. There is no significant fossil record because these animals are thought to be recent entries into the aquatic environment (Uhen, 2007). Both polar bears and sea otters are covered in fur like most mammals, but they have adapted an oilier fur that is practically waterproof (Reidenberg, 2007).…

    1) After looking at the graphs in Figures 3 and 4, it is obvious that killer whales are the cause behind the deaths of a large amount of sea otters. Despite the data for Figure 3 showing all sea otter the researchers encountered, while the data for Figure 4 showing sea otters with radio tags, both figures still show a drastic decrease in sea otter population with the only main difference between Kulak Bay and Clam Lagoon being the ease of access that killer whales have to the areas. The researchers looked at 2 different sets of data because they wanted to show the general decline in the population in figure 3 and then show a more specific set of otters to show that the general decline was not because of human error. By having figure 4 focus on…

The first reasoning of why manatees are the best underwater creatures is because of how different they live compared to the rest of the sea animals. “As with so many of the manatee attributes, the structure of its bones is unusual” (Reep par. 4). Also, manatees have different characteristics than others. Manatees are big, yet they do not kill others. They are considered the peacemakers because they are not considered prey and don’t attack prey.…

Sea otters number in the wild life is declining rapidly due to two possible problems: environmental pollution and attacks by predators. While the reading passage supports the claim that the decreasement of the sea otters is caused by the pollution, especially by human activities, the lecture points out that the assaults by the predators are the actual problem. First of all, sea otters are vurnerable to be hunted, and they have their natural predators: the orcas. It is not caused by the pollutions, contrary with the reading passage, since there are only a little number of sea otters that die on the shore.…
