This is why many soldier having a desire for tattoos wait until their service or enlistment time frame has been served before being tattooed. An aspect of military culture is uniformity. It is impossible for the military to govern the type of tattoos individuals place on themselves. Tattoos depicting sexual provocative imagry or gang related symbols that can be hidden in a variety of different ways, never noticed by untrained individual, could cause a division inside the military community. Individuality in essence is why majority of people have tattoos, as they are “...seen as a form of rebellion…” (Keinlen 25), which is a contradiction to the military’s idealism camaraderie and teamwork. A basic tenet of military culture is the priority of the group over the individual. Team building shuns the idea of individuality, as in the daily mission of the military relies on teamwork. There has to be a point when we draw the line and say it is not acceptable for individuals to represent our nation as a whole and to let us all be judged based off a person's own individual choice of how they express themselves. Look at our prison’s inmates; tattooed head-to-toe, all in uniforms. Tattooed soldiers doesn’t paint a different picture or a very civilized society to other countries, nor does it show our military service men and women as being individuals of honor and discipline. Tattoos are self serving, and have their place. However, how disgusted would you be if you, while driving on the highway, see a Ferrari or a Bentley pass you by with a bumper
