What is Meth Mouth? “Meth Mouth” is a term used to describe the mouth of a methamphetamine user because of the extensive tooth decay that often occurs with the use of this drug. Using meth can cause decay to the point that the teeth cannot be saved and must be pulled or extracted. It’s also linked to tooth fracture, acid erosion, and other oral problems. Methamphetamine is also known as meth, crystal, crank, speed, glass, ice and dope. The main ingredients of methamphetamines are Lithium, ether, red phosphorus, and Iye. These chemicals are capable of stripping tooth enamel in a matter of weeks. Ingredients can also include battery acid, lantern fuel, antifreeze, hydrochloric acid, drain cleaner, lye and over-the-counter cold medications containing ephedrine which are corrosives and cause skin irritation. Meth mouth is very difficult to treat unless the patient stops using methamphetamine. Many drug users lack access to dental treatment often due to poverty. Those who are willing to seek dental treatment often struggle admitting to their drug use. Providing dental service to people who use meth can also be dangerous with the mixture of local anesthetics the mixture can cause serious heart problems. Fluoride toothpaste is very important to the restoration of dental health for users but only prescription fluoride rinses can effectively treat the condition. Drugs that increase the amount of saliva in the mouth, can be used to treat dry mouth and protect against dental health problems. Education about oral hygiene, changes in diet, consumption of water, are often necessary for recovering drug users that are receiving dental treatment. Meth mouth is almost always treatable.
