Labeled “the most interesting” is usually given to the antagonist who goes insane and constructs killing spree. To some, MacBeth would be the only fascinating character, given the play was named after him. MacBeth is such a peculiar yet tragic play for me to narrow down to a single most intriguing character. I believe Lady MacBeth, MacDuff, and Malcolm are as equally interesting as MacBeth in Macbeth.
Lady Macbeth is easily considered an interesting character. Beginning with her malevolent comment when MacBeth began to show hesitation, “I have given suck, and know/ How tender 'tis to love the babe that milks me:/ I would, while it was smiling in my face,/ Have pluck'd my nipple from his boneless gums,/ And dash'd the brains out, had I so sworn as you/ Have done to this” (1.7.533-538), she quickly caught my attention. She is singlehandedly the mastermind behind the killing of King Duncan. She encouraged her husband to do the deed, but she would have done it herself if Duncan had not resembled her father. He was the first to discover King Duncan dead, and immediately became suspicious of MacBeth. MacDuff didn’t not attend MacBeth’s banquet, revealing his distrust with MacBeth and his loyalty with Malcolm. MacDuff goes to England to help Malcolm reclaim his throne and create an army, as a punishment MacBeth orders assassins to kill MacDuff and his family. The assassins successfully kill Lady MacDuff and their children. MacDuff, who was in England at the time, lived to take revenge on MacBeth at the end of the play, slaying MacBeth in battle and restoring Scotland’s leadership rightfully to Malcolm. MacDuff reveals MacBeth’s death in an impressive way, “Despair thy charm;/ And let the angel whom thou still hast served/ Tell thee, Macduff was from his mother's womb/ Untimely ripp'd” (5.8.2491-2494).
