Embryonic stem cell research is one of the most highly debated topics in modern day society; the possibility of recreating life using these pluripotent stem cells is a gigantic advancement in medical research. Former First Lady of the United States, Nancy Reagan said, “Embryonic stem cell research has the potential to alleviate so much suffering.”(“Brainy Quotes”). Though, it should not be taken lightly, for many issues spur over the use of embryonic stem cells for research; the use of embryonic stem cells in medical research should be permitted. They have the capability to save many lives, commence new biological discoveries, and will be carried out in accord with the new federal guidelines.
Although this may be true, many individuals oppose this concept, viewing the use of embryonic stem cells in research as a moral concern.; embryonic stem cell research is the use of embryonic stem cells, which are unspecialized cells that have the ability to transform into any cell type or tissue, for medical purposes (Murnaghan).Even though they have this ability, they have been reported to have a couple of medical issues, and knowledge of actual clinical success has been few (“Center for Bio Ethics and Human Dignity”). The stem cells used in research derive from blastocysts, a hollow ball of cells that are four to five days old; these blastocysts are donated to scientists from couples who practice IVF, in vitro fertilization, to conceive. Using embryonic stem cells in examination destroys the blastocyst, killing the embryo, which is why this case is such a big controversy (Korenman). A number of critics, religious groups, cultures, and other organizations, and scientists conflict over the status the embryo has in society. Those who are against this cause believe that life begins at fertilization, and they speak about the value of human life; former United States President, George Bush stated, “I worry about a culture that devalues life.” (Bush). Notably, embryonic stem cell research does not “devalue” human life; this entire project was carried out with the purpose of improving life, and this project was also carried out in hopes of potentially finding more information. Funding embryonic cell research was also an issue, but this will be discussed later on in this essay. With the increasing need for new antidotes for various illnesses, scientists are always looking for the next big thing. Medical research has brought mankind a long way; especially during the medical revolution, during the industrialization period, when people began to live a more sanitary lifestyle with modern day medicine. The evolution of medicine has made many people almost immune to first world illnesses, like malaria, diarrhea, and typhus. Society has allowed medicine to blossom, allowing humans to expect to live longer lives; though with this new life of leisure, post industrialization, harnesses a ground for new types of diseases to form. These include cancer, heart disease, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s, and diabetes, which primarily develop in the older population. According to the Center for Disease Control, 20.9 million people have been diagnosed with diabetes, 20.1 million people have been diagnosed with cancer, and 26.6 million people have been diagnosed with heart disease (“Center for Disease Control”). Many scientists, biologists, and medical researchers have been searching for ways to treat these very fatal common illnesses; Embryonic stem cells have the potential to do so, for the fact that they are pluripotent gives professionals hope of finally finding a cure and saving thousands of lives. Even though many moral and financial concerns form over this topic, laws and politics have taken these things into account and have compromised better solutions. With the increasing need for more medical technology, embryonic stem cell research has aided in scientific innovation, and it has shown itself as a valuable piece to its future; every day, new obstacles hinder scientists from achieving their goals with stem cell research.
