High School and Dual Credit Students who have become accustomed to the laid back style of public high school may have experienced a difficult transition into dual credit coursework and the college classroom environment. The rigorous curriculum and the respect level expected from them drastically differs with that of their normal school experience. However, despite the obvious distinction, there are similarities between the two as well.
Firstly, the atmosphere in a college classroom versus a high school classroom is dramatically different. Although both environments include the same students, the behavior of these students differ from place to place. For example, during a class at the high school, students can be found laughing, on their phones, and barely paying attention to what the teacher has to say. But put those same students in a professor’s lecture and you will find nothing but respect and attentive learning. Secondly, both high school and dual credit courses offer challenging curriculum with weekly homework assignments. In the same way, college professors expect their students to buy their own scantrons in time for exams, take detailed notes, and study the material they are learning regularly. However, high school teachers can be known for extending deadlines for a student’s convenience, while college professors expect the students to make sure they have everything organized and prepared in advance. High School teachers are known to delay assigning homework if there is a big game or a school function approaching, while in college, a professor gives you all of your assignments and tells students that it is up to them to manage their own
