When most people think of the dentist they think of drilling in their teeth, loud scraping, and sore gums, but when I think of the dentist I think of clean teeth, shiny tools, and skilled dental hygienists. Dental hygienists are specifically trained to clean peoples teeth and teach proper oral care, which I why I chose to research their profession. What influenced me to choose this profession was, I have wanted to work in the field of dental hygienistry since the fourth grade and I have always been interested in what the dental hygienists do. Education includes a High school diploma or GED, an associate’s degree or bachelor’s degree, and licensing in the state they wish to practice in. To earn an associate’s degree future dental hygienists must attend a two year or technical college and complete a 70 credit program. The program focuses heavily on biology, chemistry, and patient behavior. Prospective dental hygienists also have the option to go to a bachelor’s degree program. The bachelor's degree program is less popular and typically more expensive to attend. Once the program has been completed dental hygienists must become licensed by taking a licensing exam called the National Board Dental Hygiene Examination and pass a state or regional clinical licensure exam. I think I would fit as a dental hygienist for many reasons. First, I enjoy working with others and dental hygienists must have the ability to work with dentists, other dental hygienists, dental assistants, and patients. Next, I am a decisive person which will help me make decisions on what could be wrong with patients teeth or what to do when cleaning patients teeth. Third, I love to help people which is of considerable importance when being a dental hygienist because if I didn't like to help people I would not enjoy cleaning teeth or interacting with patients. Also, I am a social person that likes to work with others and see them learn and grow. If I am a dental hygienist and I didn't like working with others I would not help my patients learn or grow. Fifth, I am conventional and I like to follow set rules and procedures which applies to being a dental hygienist because most of the time they do the same specific procedures on a day to day basis. Finally, I like having schedule autonomy which is greatly available when working as a dental hygienist. As much I do fit into the career, when I first meet my patients I might not talk to them as much because I am fairly introverted but once I get to know them I will talk to them more and make them feel more
