The Common Core State Standards have become a controversial topic among teachers, parents, government, and businessmen. Much has been written about the topic which has made it a bit confusing. The Common Core State Standards or CCSS, are a set of expectation or standards that students should be capable of performing in math and English language arts for every grade level. There are currently 45 states that have fully adopted the CCSS. (ABC ) The Common Core State Standards have the potential to significantly improve the outcomes and equity in our state’s educational programs, therefore the standards should stay as they are and not be removed as many people debate. Ross Wiener suggests, in his “Teaching to the Core”, that states should not waste time and finances to develop new tools such as testing. The states have the opportunity to collaborate and share what already exists. Since the CCSS has been adopted in most states, a student is able to transition from one state to the next, with much more ease. Many students already use smart phones, tablets, and computers in their own homes so why not at school. Many teachers already use PowerPoint. Digital tools provide opportunities for interaction and collaborations in all different contexts. Students can be taught how to locate critical information from the internet for them to evaluate then communicate the information in essay or verbal forms. It has been found that students who often struggle with traditional literacy were successful in analytical thought and symbolic representation of ideas when it comes to the practice of higher-level literacy involving a webpage design. This would help students since many of them already have established patterns for finding information online that may not be the most accurate. Another way student can illustrate collaboration with digital tools and literacy is to create a story that they can turn into a recorded radio play. PowerPoint presentations are another way a student can use technology to give a report on what they have read for school work. The CCSS already calls for students to use technology to share information.
