Get out while you can! You sure want to be a tech? These are the first discouraging words I heard when I went into my first practicum, and I won’t be the last person to hear these words. Ever since I heard those words I always wondered why did they ask me that. After taking Mark’s shop management class he gave me the clues and I finally came up with my answer. Of course like any career in today’s world you need to further educate yourself. If you want to be a tech there is educational requirements, there are 1-2 year associate degree programs that many places offer or there’s also certificate programs. If you have passion one will work hard to become the best technician one can be. Also if one is truly determined one will see through to where one is at the best of their abilities, and being passionate you’ll want to keep learning and finding ways to improve. I feel being passionate and determined are vital in becoming a service technician. I did some research found some interesting facts for requirements for automotive service technicians. For new automotive technicians have a few different paths to take to acquire the skills and knowledge needed. There are basic entry level courses available for high school students who are interested in the career. “Technically speaking though, an education is not needed to become a mechanic. Nonetheless, most employers will not use a person without official training. Another trait someone should have is having good communication skills. It’s important to have consist positive attitude is as a technician you will most likely work with a team of other technicians and having consist positive attitude will reflect on to the other team members and keep everyone in a better mood. At times techs can get real angry or frustrated at times and keeping a consist attitude can help other techs bounce out of frustration. Big quality to have is communication skills. Being that automotive is in the retail industry occasionally techs will have to communicate with customers. Not only that communicating with staff such as service manager, say a shop equipment breaks communicating with the service manager in a timely manner is
