Pigs, cows, rats, chickens, horses, etc. are all smart and unique animals, but behind closed doors they endure brutal cruelty. The Humane Farming Association gives insight on the conditions of these farm animals: “Factory Farm conditions result in severe physiological as well as behavioral animal’s afflictions” (Rohr 114). These conditions cause many other diseases such as, anemia, influenza, and pneumonia just to name a few. Many of these animals never see daylight. “ Animals are on our dinner tale because humans are powerful enough to control their lives from birth.”( Rohr 44). These animals are confined, controlled, injected with millions of steroids, used as test proteges and killed all at the hands of humans. Yet, somehow this is all normal. Not only do we kill them, but we use more that one way. The most common killing methods are slitting their throats and shoving metal rods through their brains, as well as electrocution. Humans tend to forget that these animals experience physical and emotional pain as well as suffering just as us humans do. Peter Singer argues that because an animal has a nervous system therefore they can suffer just as humans (17). This is absurd in the eyes of people. Humans believe animals are to be of service to mankind and this statement may very well be true to a certain extent when it comes to those animals who serve to help the needy; such as wounded soldiers, the blind, or the elderly. Furthermore, while providing this service, these animals are not harmed. There are roughly nine hundred to two thousand new animal cruelty incidents that occur every year at the hands of humans. These thoughtless people need to realize all animals are entitled to the possession of their own lives. The interest of animals should be afforded the same consideration as the interest of humans. Animals deserve to be treated with the same respect as humans and these animals should receive it in the most humane way possible. However, humane is no longer the way, these animals do not receive exercise, wholesome food, proper veterinary care or fresh air. Not only are these factory farms disgusting and full of mistreatment, they are a number one breeding ground for many infectious diseases. These animals’ lives can be summed up in a matter of depression, stress, abuse and diseases. “Hundreds of animals are forced to live in cages or crates just barely larger than their own bodies. While one species may be caged alone without any social contact, other species may be crowded so tightly together they fall prey to stress-induced …show more content…
They believe animals do not deserve rights because they don’t complete the duties that an everyday person does. They believe rights only come from the “ability to think” not the “ability to suffer.” In other words, if rights are given from the ability to think than some humans - babies and mentally incapacitated - do not deserve to have rights. The ability to think is seen as an absurd reason to obtain rights. Newborns, the mentally ill and mentally incapacitated also cannot fulfill the task/duties of an average person, therefore do not deserve their rights either. If only those who have the ability to think had rights, then the mentally disabled, babies and the mentally ill would be free to kill and
