Esperanza lost everything she owned in just one night. In the story, Esperanza lost her father to bandits. Losing her father meant that for the rest of her life, she would have to live without one of her parents and one of her closest friends. On top of that, Esperanza had her house burned down, which forced her to move from Mexico to California to work. She had to move from where she was raised to a place foreign to her, which made it uncomfortable for Esperanza. As she lost who she loved and what she owned, Esperanza realized that life doesn’t always go as planned.
In Mexico, Esperanza received whatever she asked for. However, in California, Esperanza had to learn to work hard and earn what she wanted. To make matters worse, a strike for better working conditions threatened to take Esperanza’s job away and create chaos in her new life. As all of this happened, Esperanza had to stay strong and keep working so that she could pay the hospital bill for her mother. She also had to keep calm and not let the strikers change her mind about continuing to work in the conditions she was working in.
