Esophagus- The esophagus is a muscular tube that runs behind the trachea. The upper esophageal sphincter is a bundle of muscles that keeps food from going down the windpipe. The lower esophageal sphincter when it’s closed prevents acid and stomach contents from traveling backwards.

Stomach- The stomach receives food from the esophagus and strong acids help break the food down. A lining of mucus protects the stomach from digesting itself and the stomach also stirs the acid-food mixture. Then the pyloric sphincter opens to allow food to pass from the stomach to the small intestine.

Duodenum- The duodenum connects the stomach to the small intestine. Partially digested food from the stomach gets digested in it. Bile from the liver and gallbladder,

If someone who had celiac disease accidentally ate a product that contains gluten they would probably experience abdominal pain and diarrhea. Some people don’t experience any signs or symptoms after eating gluten, but this doesn’t mean it’s not harmful to them. Even trace amounts of gluten can be damaging, whether or not they show signs or symptoms. This treatment is used because if gluten destroyed your villi then you have to avoid it in order for it to not harm
