While escapist reading is seen as something that should be prohibited, it in fact, has a use in many scenarios. For example: those within the military who seek to escape into a world where there is no violence, blood-shed or grotesque scenes, may seek to read novels that have no war within them. However, while in jail she was then able to read novels containing high standards and morals that helped her return to back reality.
But, what critics fail to realize is that for decades, escapist reading has survived through generations. Women in the nineties read strong heroine novels, which gave them hope and strength in facing their real problems. Those who dwelled on farms tended to select novels with pioneers facing similar trails to what they too were facing. This enabled them to identify with another source.
