I rode horses for most of my childhood, and at one point, I even owned my own horse. I trained this horse, making us inseparable. Most weekends, I rode bright and early into the mountains, without returning until near dark. Being in the complete solitude of nature with my horse became a favorite pastime for me. Yet now, after moving and leaving my companion behind, I rarely experience that isolation and peace.…

I’d been interested in horsemanship for a long time, but I never had access to stables. So I was delighted to learn that Susan was an accomplished rider and that she could teach me how to ride. The first time I got on a horse, I felt dizzy. Sitting stiffly, I held too tightly to the horse because I was afraid of falling. Susan corrected my posture patiently and was encouraging throughout our lessons.…
I’ve realized in my lifetime that saddling a horse that you are going to ride is not as natural of an act to other people as it is to me. Since the moment I had both the strength and height to lift my own tiny saddle up to the back of my animal, I was saddling by myself. These days in the time that I set aside to ride, I don’t even think about the act of saddling, I could almost finish the act blindfolded. In my realization that not all people know how to saddle a horse and if they have an idea it may not be the proper way, I decided to share my knowledge in this area with others.…

The first couple of months of school were quite challenging as I was trying to handle the workload and learn the language. Although I spoke some English upon arrival to the country, my language skills were certainly nowhere near what one might consider college adequate. However, it was not the language barrier that was of utmost concern. Shortly before I moved to the country, my father became strangely ill. By the time I started attending college his health was still not improving, and no doctor was able to diagnose him correctly.…

There has also been research conducted on the effects of Animal-Assisted therapy among young children and preschool children in school. When I was four, I became a world-renowned veterinarian. Confidently, I strolled out of my house wearing my ID card and lab coat into the crisp and brightly lit night air. It was Halloween, and I was ready to conquer the neighborhood. Even though I was only playing the part of animal doctor for the night, it was evident that my love for amazing creatures was as real as any vet’s.…
