The Equal Pay Act was established in 1963 by Congress, “to combat ‘the ancient but outmoded belief that a man, because of his role in society, should be paid more than women.’” (Guerin and Barreiro, 118) The goal of the Equal Pay Act is to protect both men and women from wage discrimination when a job is similar and requires the same type of skill and responsibility. According to the EPA, an employer is required by law to treat both men and women equally and fairly. Pay differences are only to be permitted when based on job skills, education, and responsibility. A difference in pay based solely on the sex of the individual is not allowed according to the law.
