To assist with epidemiology is epidemiology variables or characteristics that can be observed and/or measured. There are three categories of epidemiologic variables: (1) Time, (2) Place, and (3) Person. Time refers to the time of illness or of a relevant event. Place shows the environment in which illness occurs and person indicates individuals who are infected, ill, or at risk. Each of these epidemiologic variables contains characteristics.
