English 1101

As I have progressed through school writing has been my Achilles heel. I was never fond of writing and I always dreaded the idea of writing essays. I was never a strong writer. I always considered myself a subpar writer. I believed that I was capable of meeting expectations rather than exceeding. College and high school English are drastically different. High school English was less demanding, while College English requires lots of focus and attention to detail. English 1101 was filled with growing pains and learning experiences. At first, I was overwhelmed by the criticism noted on my essays, however the criticism motivated me to improve writing to eliminate the negative feedback. Throughout the year I faced situations where I struggled with …show more content…
In my opinion, a good introduction and thesis is what allows an essay to flow. The introduction of an essay sets the tone of the paper. If the introduction of a paragraph is poor, then the rest of the paper will be poor. I was able to determine what I wanted to discuss however I was unable to convey an introduction and thesis that correctly set the tone for my essays. The words in my introductions seemed to be filled with wordiness, awkwardness, and poor word choice. The introduction of my first paper lacked meaning and details. For example a sentence in the introduction of my first paper read, “Before I was set to star as a beau in the Christian Rights of Passage Cotillion, my siblings and I took pictures to capture the moment,” however after revision the sentence changed to, “October 25, 2014, I remember the night very vividly. This was the night of the Christian Rites of Passage Cotillion.” The revision process exhibit in my portfolio provides the revision of the entire introduction as well as the progression I have made towards writing the best introduction I can. I consider the two revised essay exhibits within my portfolio my best

Throughout this course I have learned quite a bit, and considering that this is the second time I am taking this course, that is saying something. However, I did show up for this semester a lot more than I did in my previous semester so that’s probably a contributing factor. I also believe that I paid attention far more this semester than I did the last time I took this course. English 1101 has actually been one of my favorite courses I have taken at SRTC. Perhaps that’s why I’m taking it a second time.…

English 1101 is a course aimed to prepare students for their future writing courses and have the necessary skills for writing college level work. Coming into this course I was hopeful that it would improve my general writing skills since throughout my secondary schooling it was acceptable but not exceptional. My current faults are hindering the comprehensiveness of my writings because readers have to sift through the damage to understand the argument and focus of the topic. While I am able to come up with content my inability to logically put it into a written form is something I intended to improve. After this course I hope to have revamped my former weaknesses so I can be a more clear and cohesive writer for the future…

I never considered myself to be an excellent writer but still thought I wrote well enough to get my point across without confusing the reader too much. However, any confidence that I had in my writing skills was lost for a short time when I had to write my first timed essay in school. Luckily, the timed essay assignment also helped me see that I needed to work on my writing and, as a result, actually turned out to be a more positive experience rather than a negative one. It was just another regular school day that was near its end, and I had one more class to go to before everyone was released to go home.…

There are good writers and there are good writers who work hard to become better. Mrs. Fiske, my English teacher junior and senior year of high school always told me that I was one of the best writers in my class but I could always be better. Spelling has always been one of my strong suits and I always get bothered when people can’t spell simple words. I’m pretty good at writing essays but I do not enjoy writing them at all.…

I had to take English 1102 as a required course to obtain my degree. I was nervous about taking an online class because I had never taken one. Coming into English 170 this semester I did know quite what to expect. I had always been an enthused writer who excelled at expressing himself on paper but never at this high of a level. Now at the end of my semester in Writing Seminar I can say that my approach to writing has changed to a certain extent. Coming fresh out of high school my thoughts about writing were that you first make an outline of ideas, then brainstorm a strategy to make those ideas flow together properly, and finally form that into a five paragraph essay. I now look back on that approach with laughter.…

People say, “ college level writing comes from college level thinking”. However, students often fail to realize this truth and eventually, criticize their teachers for low grades. In my case, I always viewed myself as an average writer until I joined college. During high school years, when I hear English teachers lecture students on revising their writing, I usually produce an average essay eligible for a fair grade; most of the time, I did receive acceptable grades in those writing .Even so, I did not feel confident in writing.…

Honestly as the semester progressed I believe my writing stared out strong and began to decrease as the semester went on. I believe this is partially linked to the lack of motivation and the senioritis as a second year in college. Overall I still did well with all the essays but I think they decreased in overall quality as the semester went on. But what I did improve on is how to begin and essay and how to get the reader interested in reading my essay.…

Before writing this essay, I read the prompt and decided that I was going to write about my struggles of writing in my high school English classes and the struggles of not understanding how to write well. I wrote notes down on a piece of paper; I wrote about how I struggled during freshman year, being new to the high school environment, and I wrote about my senior year, still struggling with writing but finding strategies that helped better my writing. I wrote a rough draft and had Ruvy and Niara read it, told me their opinions about it, and gave me constructive criticism on how improve it. Niara suggested that I incorporate ways on how I might deal with college English classes as I did with high school English classes; so I did, I elaborated…

Throughout my sixteen weeks in English 101 I believe that my writing skills have developed in ways that I never thought they would develop. There is always room for improvement, especially with writing. Before taking this class I thought I was a good writer, but after the first few essays I realized how much I could truly improve upon. The writing topics and prompts we were given each taught me something more about writing, how to structure things, or simple writing tactics that could make my essays better. I’ve never been good with writing formal essays, but this class taught me how to be a lot less informal in my writing.…
