This novel is full of romance, action, and magic. It’s also full of themes. The themes are implied throughout the text, but then are directly stated. One theme is directly stated by Jessamyn, “‘They were wishes. The only reason they worked when they did was because the person who stumbled across them believed wholeheartedly. A wish is just words. Belief is the catalyst. It’s what sets that wish into motion. When two people want the same exact thing and that wish is caught between them, there’s nothing more powerful”’ (Picoult & Van Leer 313). Every few chapters, a paragraph theme is directly stated. “Why is it that we wait till the last minute to do the things we should be doing all along?” (Picoult and Van Leer 219). “Maybe love is only safe in places where it can’t change” (Picoult and Van Leer 249). “Well, you have to find that rare someone for whom you’re not putting on a show. Someone who shines a spotlight in your direction… just because you’re you” (Picoult and Van Leer 294). “Hope is why you get out of bed in the morning, and why you dream at night. Hope is what makes us believe that things can only get better. Hope is what keeps us going” (Picoult and Van Leer 327). “There’s a difference between a house and a home...That’s because home isn’t where you are.
