Goleman remind Thickener's theory that empathy stems from a kind of physical imitation of the distress of another that is different from sympathy, which refers to the feeling for the general plight of another without sharing what the other is feeling. Goleman also refers to empathy as attunement - being emotionally in sync with another.
Bergman (1998:13) clarifies the empathy as the ability to identify accurately the feeling state of another person, and to link to that with tolerance and understanding. Empathy involves identification with the whole range of human feelings, including joy and satisfaction, as well as sorrow, fear, and rockiness. Bergman (1998: 73-76) states that empathy is essential for achieving healthy human interaction in the home as well as in the workplace and the world at large. Without empathy there can be no community, no family, and no chance for survival. They furthermore see empathy as the saving grace of human society. Bergman postulate that, as the workforce becomes increasingly diverse, sensitivity training, which is linked to empathy, is essential to minimize conflict among people of different genders, races and
