Since the 19th century, scientists have been researching stem cells as cures for diseases. “In the mid 1800s it …show more content…
There have been many studies showing the benefits of the cells, such as a study conducted for myocardial infarctions. Embryonic stem cells are considered a source for myocardial regeneration. The study confirmed that “embryonic stem cells, through differentiation within the host myocardium, can contribute to a stable beneficial outcome on contractile function and ventricular remodeling in the infarcted heart.” (Hodgson, Behfar). Embryonic stem cells, in the eyes of most scientists and researchers, hold the potential cures for many illnesses such as: spinal cord injuries, multiple sclerosis, diabetes, Parkinson's disease, cancer, Alzheimer's disease, heart disease, hundreds of rare immune system, and genetic disorders. (White).
One major breakthrough in embryonic stem cell research was the functioning of dopamine neurons in an animal model for Parkinson’s disease. Parkinson's disease is a widespread condition that is caused by the loss of midbrain neurons that synthesize the neurotransmitter dopamine. With stem cell research, embryonic stem (ES) cells can generate dopamine neurons. “If ES cells are to become the basis for cell therapies, we must develop methods of enriching for the cell of interest and demonstrate that these cells show functions that will assist in treating the disease.” ("Dopamine Neurons Derived from" …show more content…
Some pro-life activists and most pro-life organizations regard the destruction of a laboratory-fertilized human eggs to be the murder of a human life. They believe that life begins at conception, and the destruction of this pre-born life is morally unacceptable. (White). “The generation of human ES cell lines has sparked a great deal of controversy in the media, with particularly strong objections being raised to the use of human embryos in scientific research by certain religious communities.” (Rippon and Bishop
