1. MAJOR MILESTONES OF MASS MEDIA 1960- TODAY 1960- The first televised debate occurred on September 26, 1960 between Nixon and Kennedy. This changed the political landscape for future campaigns. This was the era of people having access to view the debates in real-time. The television was also used for negative or critical campaign spots. Lyndon Johnson’s 1964 campaign spot of the “Daisy Girl” is considered a classic negative spot. Broadcast television was the dominant form of mass media with just three major networks.
1970- The newspapers and television played an important role in American politics. Watergate and the Pentagon papers were exposed in the Washington Post. The beginning of investigative reporting on television “60 minutes” Media reporting with images of the Vietnam War and challenging the propaganda supplied by the government. The televised resignation of President Nixon and his boarding of the helicopter to depart the White House. The Political Persuaders” by Dan Nimmo helped a whole generation of political students and scholars to understand the new partnership between candidates and media specialists. Internet is being developed and tested. 1980;s-Cable television has nearly 53 million households subscribing, The three networks ABC, NBC and CBS were no longer the gatekeepers of news. Cable service and deregulation gave viewers a multitude of options. CNN, ESPN, and MTV just to name a few were born. This changed the landscape in world news, political news , entertainment .Satellite television catches on with pioneered channels such as HBO , TBS CBN for viewing. Mass media new sets the tone and structure of political campaigns. The term spin doctoring was born 1990- Vod is Video on demand. This is a pay per view system that allows viewers to order or download a film via television or internet to watch at their leisure. Internet and commercial internet service providers are the norm. 2000’s The creation of social networking begins. My Space , Facebook, Twitter, Google to name a few. Those who had listened to this debate on radio most would have said Nixon won however, those who watched the debate on television declared Kennedy the winner. Nixon had just come out of the hospital for a knee injury and hit the same knee exiting the car. His complexion was pale and had a five o’clock shadow. He allowed a coat of Lazy Shave pancake makeup to be applied to his face however, when he was under the hot lights in the studio the powder melted from perspiration. Nixon chose a light gray suit which blended into the back drop of the set and seemed to match his pale complexion. When Nixon was answering a question he looked off to the side to address reporters which gave the appearance as shifty to avoid eye contact with the public. On one hand they want the media to give as much information about a candidate to make an informed decision, On the other hand, they feel the candidate that can pay more for TV and media exposure have more influence on public option and thus can receive more votes.
As an individual, we must evaluate each candidate’s claims with a critical eye. We have an obligation to be media literate. We must remember the five questions that should be asked about any media message: 1. Who created this message?
2. What creative techniques are used to attract my attention?
3. How might different people understand this message differently?
4. What values, lifestyles, and points of view are represented in, or omitted from, this message?
5. Why is this message being sent?
As a people, we have the duty to ensure the information we received is credible.
