The Danish use the word “hygge” to describe a way of life that is simple. The Danes enjoy sharing experiences with friends and family. It does not matter what type of shared experience it was as long as it is done together. It could be as simple as having diners that last for hours with good food, wine, and good conversations. Gullen states “it was through this observation that I realized the importance of hygge: it recognizes the humanness of life and the individuality of the person. It is an appreciation of what really matters: friends, family, love, intimacy, and happiness” (par. 4). Most people hold close relationship and their shared experiences and values to be of great importance.
