Discuss the impact of World War I (1914 - 1918) upon the US economy in the years after the War had started but we were not yet involved.
The state of the US economy in the period leading up to direct intervention in WWI can be well characterized as a dramatic plot twist. In sharp contrast to the the limited economic role that the United States played in the global economy prior in the early days of WWI, America’s progression towards direct involvement in the war catapulted it into a major economic power.

World War I was the impetus for the central government to insert controls throughout the economy. This sort of government economic control had never been exerted in the history of the United States. Simultaneously, there was a n increased demand for government assistance from the people of the US. Consequently, one of the most important effects of World War I was the great enhancement of the government’s influence in the domestic economy. [1]

Excise tax on liquor, tobacco, and other products yielded large amount of revenue for funding of the war effort. As discussed in class, most war funding, however, came from war bonds. Funding for the war effort was certainly worth it for Americans as the majority of Americans would come out of the war extremely well-off ,financially.
The leading estimate was that expenditures for World War I were around 33 billion from April 1917 to July 1st 1919. This expenditure equated to 20% of the total gross national product and, at its highest point, 25 %. The enormous spending had a stimulative effect on the national income and the gross national product
