Classification of the causative agent: N. fowleria is an Thermophilic (warm loving) Ameba. Rarely infecting humans.
E. granulosus is a parasitic worm called a tapeworm also called dog tapeworm hydatid worm or hyper tape-worm
Virulence factors of the causative agent: It has three stages of its lifecycle 1. Cyst Stage which it uses as a form to protect it from the environment or when there is a lack of food. 2.Trophozoiti Stage which is the only stage that it can infect humans. 3. Flagellate Stage two types of hosts an intermediate host (sheep, cows,) and a definitive host (Dogs, wolves, dingos). Mode of transmission: It enters the host through the tissue in the nose and makes its way up to the brain.
The tapeworm lives in Dogs where it releases eggs that get out via droppings of the dog where they get ingested by other animals such as sheep, cows and humans before burrowing through the intestinal wall and traveling through the body to the other organs such as the lungs and liver where it forms cysts.
Incubation period of the Disease: Symptoms start 1 to 9 days after swimming in contaminated water usually warm fresh water like a lake or river. Death is most likely and will occur 1 to 18 days after symptoms
