To begin, drug abuse is a major contributing factor to increasing crime rates. With drug abuse, there is often crime that is followed (1). Drug abuse opens the door for criminals to commit a variety of crimes, from the reselling of drugs to drugged driving. There are crimes that can be easily prevented if an individual didn’t abuse drugs in the first place and it would relieve a community of stress and unnecessary disruptions greatly (6). According to the National Institute of Drug Abuse, 50% of all violent crimes involve drugs (4) and accidents and deaths are a product of this. Half of all violent crimes, like domestic and child abuse, are a result of drug abuse and the utilization of drugs. There is also a correlation between drug abuse and youth abuse. Up to 80% of all cases of youth abuse are linked to drugs (4), and it is safe to say that the chances of a minor being abused is increased substantially with drugs around. Whenever an individual is abusing drugs, there is a great chance that they will harm others around them because the knowledge and decision making of an individual on drugs is never wise and logical (6). Also, abusers will often have mood swings and anger issues that can lead to them physically assaulting people around them (5). These irregular mood swings of depression and anger most likely lead to both physical abuse, and verbal abuse along with unnecessary acts of terror (5). Most common targets are spouses, children and the elderly because they are all vulnerable in the eyes of a drug abuser. Child abuse is connected to drug addiction as studies show that 50% to 80% of child abuse cases link to drugs (4). This jeopardizes the safety of others that are just simply in the wrong place at the wrong time and it is not what a community needs. To add, when on drugs, an individual forgets about their children, their family and their friends, and this causes disruptions in social interactions (5)(6). This deteriorates the safety of everyone because a society can no longer depend on the drug addict. Another group in the community that is directly affected by drug abusers are coworkers and peers. Abusers are not reliable at work as they have bad work habits and cannot focus (4). These bad habits and lack of focus lead to workplace accidents that compromise the safety of coworkers (6). Drug
