The impact of a high-fat diet (HFD) on humans is becoming increasingly noticeable with negativity, with a large amount of the US population overweight (Hedley et al ., 2002). Since obesity can cause an increase in a risk of morbidity and mortality along with other diseases (Dietz, 1998), (Fontaine et al ., 2003), it is important to understand the changes that happen due to obesity (Erilynn et al ., 2014). Other experiments found that a HFD had a harmful change in composition in Drosophila melanogaster, shown by increased glucose levels, and decreased lifespan (Heinrichsen & Haddad, 2012). Cardiac fat collection and dysfunction can be inspired by HFD in Drosophila (Birse et al ., 2010). The changes in human obesity and Drosophila are similar therefore providing the use of Drosophila as a test subject for studying …show more content…
One reason why using Drosophila for experimentation is helpful is because Drosophila have many organ systems similar to humans (Pandey & Nichols, 2011). The objective of the experiment on D. melanogaster was to find out whether or not coconut oil would affect their locomobility negatively or positively.
Methods and Materials
40 D. melanogaster were used to conduct this experiment. A sucrose solution was prepared to float the larvae to transfer them into the correct vials. Make the larvae float a measurement of 7.5g of sucrose solution was required, measure out 50 mL of distilled water and mix the sucrose solution and the distilled water together. After the sucrose and water is mixed together pour it into the vial; using a dropper pick up the amount of larvae needed for each vial and drop them into the vial. The coconut oil food for the experimental group was prepared. The empty vial was measured to
