Many people support a ban on driving while using a handheld cell phone. Driving while using a handheld cell phone should be made illegal immediately; handheld cell phones act as a distraction while driving, driving while using a cell phone is more dangerous than driving while under the influence, other individual’s lives are at risk, and using them decreases the individuals’ reaction time. Handheld cellphones are a physical distraction as well as an emotional distraction. Emotional and physical distractions are both very bad and could both be life ending. The cell phones are a distraction because eyes have to be taken off the road in order to look at it. Handheld cell phones are an emotional distraction as well. If individuals look down in order to read a text message and read something they do not like, an emotional reaction could be triggered. Which, in turn could cause an accident. While driving under the influence, individuals look at the road but lack common skills. Using a cellphone while driving however, causes individuals to take their eyes off the road for a minimum of 10 seconds. Eyes being taken off the road leads to another issue, swerving. When eyes are taken off of the road, the probability of swerving into the opposing lane grows. If a vehicle goes into oncoming traffic, the chance of a car accident occurring grows. This leads to the next issue, endangering others. When eyes are taken off the road, there is greater risk of hitting another car. There are people in that car therefore, individuals endanger others. There could be children in the car who have not had the chance to live out their future. Innocent lives should not be ended due to the carelessness of other drivers. In many cases, it is the people in the vehicle that is hit who die, not the driver who is doing
