Of Mice and Men Dream Affection
The novella Of Mice and Men, was written by John Steinbeck in 1937. It is about two migrant workers, Lennie and George, who go to work at a ranch near Soledad,California. Lennie is mentally handicapped and George is a small and an intelligent man, who takes care of Lennie. George and Lennie hope one day, they will have their own land. Candy,who work at the ranch for a long time, also wants to join in their dream too. Curley is the boss’ son of the ranch where George, Lennie, and Candy work. Curley’s wife is the only woman that is mentioned in the novella. Curley’s wife is a flirtatious woman,who likes to get a lot of attention from others. While the men are playing outside the barn, Curley 's wife walks into the barn, and only Lennie is in there. Curley’s wife finds that Lennie tries to hide the dead puppy in the hay, after he accidentally kill it. Curley’s wife tries to make Lennie talk to her, she wantss to have someone to talk to because the only person that she can talk to in the ranch is Curley. But Lennie does not want to talk to her because George told him not to talk to her. To make Lennie talk more to her, she starts to tell Lennie how she used to be and what she desired to be before she married Curley. Curley’s wife says,’’An’ I coulda sat in them big hotel, an’ had pitchers took of me.”(89). Curley’s wife wanted to be in the pictures because she thinks that if she be in the movie or poster, she will be famous and everyone will know her and pay more attention to her. But the pitcher guy never sends a letter back to her, and she thinks that her mother is the one who hide the letter from her because she doesn 't want Curley’s wife be in the pictures. So, she decides to marry Curley thinking she will have the right to do as she pleases. Curley’s wife tells Lennie,” So I married Curley. Met him out to the Riverside Dance Palace that same night.”(88). Her dream has affected the decision she make, she want a real friendship and a lot of attention. Curley’s wife thought that if she married Curley, she could do whatever she wanted at the ranch. She believes the guys at the ranch will notice her if she flatters herself around them. That is the reason why she tries to show off every time she meets a guy. Curley’s wife is too young to think what good and bad. Her decision to marry Curley is to make her life better than the one she had with her
