Over 500 patients of Dr. Fata’s were misdiagnosed with cancer. Many of the victims did not have any type of cancer at all but, Dr. Fata made each one of them and their families believe he was speaking the truth. Upon shadowing a current nurse, she began to question the practice. “Any trained professional should have instantly seen these procedures as inappropriate and even dangerous, yet when Swantek brought it up, all she got from the nurse on staff was indifference. “That’s just the way we do things here,” she recalls being told.” Swantek reported her suspicions, but nothing went any further. Not only did Dr. Fata engage in unethical behavior but the nurses “turned their heads” and continued to follow his leadership.
Dr. Fata lacks many characteristics of an ethical leader and the ability to combat evil. The qualities he lacks the most is integrity, compassion, and reverence. To me, he exhibited hubris as he appears to have felt invincible and “the normal rules and laws don’t apply” (Book) to him. He came to care more about money and the profit of his company than he did for his patients who trusted him. Not only did he lack the ability to combat evil but his nurses as well.
