Dougherty Middle School Curriculum

The wheel of academic achievement at our school has been and will continue to be fueled by data and data assessments throughout its existence. From a representative core of data assessments, we have formed our plan of restructuring. Instructional teacher strategies, teacher and parent developed student safety nets, ramp-up classes along with parental involvement and assisted behavior guide patterns form the bases of our academic progress plan. We expect to elevate our scores to a higher percentage level in each domain of the Criterion Referenced Competency Test. Our expectations are due to our knowledge of deficiencies and effective teaching strategies that will foster growth. We are profoundly convinced that the established plans, committed instructional professionals and focused administrative leadership will encourage our children to surpass the norm scores in all academic areas. The primary purpose of Dougherty Middle School is to provide flexible, comprehensive educational programs which will provide opportunities and experiences designed to enable each student to maximize his/her potential according to individual needs and abilities so that he/she may be able to produce in a technological society. Both the school and the community have an obligation to be mutually involved in the continuous evaluation and improvement of the total educational program from year to year. To have a quality educational program, the community is responsible for providing moral support, resource talent, and financial assistance. The school is responsible for creating a positive, flexible learning environment conducive to motivating each student, not only to develop the student’s maximum intellectual potential, but also to develop those social and moral values basic to functioning in a changing culture and society. Recognizing that each student has a right to develop according to his/her individual needs and abilities, Dougherty Middle is committed to offering a comprehensive curriculum made up of those goals and instructional sequences to provide a desirable balance among activities designed to develop the cognitive, effective, and psychomotor domains. …show more content…
In order to implement effectively the total educational program, the staff and administration are responsible for professional growth and development. They are also responsible for developing effective school-community relationships conducive to positive school-community interaction.

Over the past five years many positive changes have occurred at Dougherty Middle School. The current growth is a result of many factors, not the least of which is the recent population explosion in Dougherty County is so great that the system had to build another middle school to accommodate the growth. Infrastructure Dougherty Middle has undergone quite a facelift during the last five years. The band room and chorus room were rebuilt and a totally new art room was added onto the existing structure. Science classrooms were enlarged in the two existing wings. A new 7th grade wing was added to the back of the building. New spacious classrooms were built with both teacher and student in mind. Old traditional chalkboards were replaced by allergy free, state-of-the art dust free marker boards. Large closets hold not only personal belongings, but also entire classroom sets of textbooks. Ramps added to the end of all wings allowing students ease of transition between classes. The stage was moved to the end of the cafeteria addition and the enlarge space made for a brighter, cheerier place to dine. Our students now enjoy a hot

We as a faculty recognize that our students are living in an age that is quite different from that in which teachers and parents experienced school. We will need to be diligent in reviewing the latest in technology as well as keeping our faculty current in the best methods for teaching students in this era.

Parental Involvement

School home partnership is designed to promote a collaboration relationship between families and school personnel to support and promote practices in the home and at school that improve children’s learning and performance. Dougherty Middle School administrators feel that the key to improving this partnership is through our parent facilitator. The parent facilitator offer training for both parents and staff in raising the level of parent involvement and promoting home/school collaboration.

Communication

Communication is another field that needs dramatic improvement. We are just beginning to see the power of the computer network and all that it will bring to improve teaching and communications. Already it has increased the ease of teacher-administrator communication, which is essential to keeping teachers happy and
