In his article “America has problems, but not the ones you hear about” Saunders (2016) writes about some of the recent speeches from the the 2016 Republican National Convention. He begins his article by telling his readers that his experience as a foreign correspondent leads him to a conclusion that journalists cannot believe what is said at events that are meant for local audiences. He notes that Donald Trump said at the 2016 Republican Convention that crime and illegal immigration was a big problem the United States. Saunders investigated and found from independent sources that according the the USA Customs and Border Protection Agency, undocumented migrants living in the USA was 2 million people lower since 2010. Mexican illegal crossings in 2015 was 18 percent lower than 2014. On violent crimes Saunders found that looking at FBI statistics, the USA has over the last 20 years experienced an ever decreasing crime rate (Saunders, 2016).
What Saunders also found in reviewing public government statistics was that there was a significant increase of mass-casualty shootings. In Saunders’ opinion that was something the Republican Convention did not address because the crime is mostly rooted in the policy not to to control dangerous assault weapons, and the Republicans do not think that is a policy area they would advocate.
