It is an issue that no certain group of people is exempt from. Raising awareness to this growing issue and creating a support group is the overall goal of achievement. We are implementing a support group for survivors, victims, and their family members. We hope to ensure a safe environment where the members of the group feel welcomed and have a sense of belonging. In addition to the physical harm, IPV and domestic violence can create health problems that can lead to mental illness, substance abuse, and even suicide attempts. In 1919, the U.S. surgeon general declared violence as a significant health problem and that is it preventable (Wheeler & McClain, 2015). Domestic violence affects individuals in every community regardless of age, gender, race, sexual orientation, economic status, and religion. It is a universal phenomenon that persists in all countries of the world. Although there is no typical victim, there are several factors that contribute to violence that include poverty, lack of education, substance abuse, and a history of violence within the family. For victims of domestic violence, it can be challenging living in a rural community. There may not be adequate resources such as a safe house or shelter, access to proper medical care, and poor economic status of the community could negatively affect the victim’s situation. Along with the immediate harm caused, domestic violence has a deeper impact creating consequences for the women who experience it and has a traumatic effect on those who witness it such as children. There are also underlying factors that creates learned behavior, low self-esteem for victims, and an unequal balance of power.
