A dog is man’s best friend. People all around the world love their dogs, but they do not love to pick up after them. Do they actually know how much harm they are causing? Water cleanliness today is going down the drain. In America, it’s recorded that 40% of the rivers and 46% of the lakes are polluted. These bodies of water are considered unhealthy for swimming, fishing or aquatic life (Rinkesh). A person may wonder why, and question what the causes could be. One of the major reasons for this type of pollution is dog feces being discarded improperly. Over forty-two and a half million homes in the United States own one or more dogs. This account for more than seventy-three million dogs in this country alone (Coren). As a person can see, there is a huge dog population in the world. These dogs can make a lot of poop! If that poop is not picked up, it can harm many things, including people, fish, and more. Dog poop can be more harmful than we realize.

Even if we cannot control every aspect of pollution, we can control a little bit. All the people in the United States, Canada, Great Britain, Germany, Italy, and France added up would total less than the total dogs in the world, at least 525 million (Coren)! All those dogs would cause a lot of waste, and that would make plenty of poop! We have seen that dog waste is a huge source of environmental pollution and potential disease. We should all do our part to properly dispose of dog waste. People should take responsibility to pick up their dog’s feces. It has become a law in many urban and suburban areas (Phillips).
