The women in Djibouti wear long skirts and dresses and over that they wear a shamma. A shamma is a brightly colored piece of fabric that is see-through. The men in Djibouti wear a fouta which is a thin strip of cloth that is worn as a long skirt (morrow 78). The main holidays in Djibouti are New Years, which is celebrated on January 1, Labor Day, which is celebrated on May 1 and Independence day, which is celebrated on June 27 (www.culturegrams.com). Djibouti is very poor and like what was said in the first paragraph, they do not have the basic necessities as here in the United States. This being food is very hard for them to get and they depend on imports to meet their food needs (www.worldbank.org). Also, like here in the United States, Djibouti has quite a few religions. Some of the most important religions in Djibouti are Baha’i, Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Jainism, Judaism, Shinto, Sikhism, Taoism and Zoroastrianism (www.cia.gov). The people of Djibouti elect a president to a six year term. The president that is elected may not serve more than two terms. Not only do the people elect the president but they also elect the 65 members of the nation’s legislature, which is known as the Chambers of Deputies (world book 256). They have some ways of transportation in Djibouti which is airports, railways, roads, ports and terminals (www.cia.gov). The Djibouti flag has a lot of meaning to it. The blue stripe on the flag represents the Issas clan. The green stripe represents the Afars. The red star is a symbol of Unity (morrow 53).
