Canada is a large country filled with provinces that range in cultural distinctiveness, political life and overall economic goals. In a sense, each province is unique from one another and can be seen as a “small world” within a larger Canadian context. In the article titled: “Small Worlds of Diversity: Views Toward Immigration and Racial Minorities in Canadian Provinces”, Antoine Bilodeau, Luc Turgeon and Ekrem Karakoc examine each province’s views on immigration and racial minorities by developing three key questions: What are the differences in views toward immigration and racial minorities across Canada? Has public opinion evolved over the years?…
My background defines who I am and my ambitions. Due to my background I love diversity and seek to create an inclusive society. My love for differences stems my unique family structure and the diversity they raised me in. Two mothers adopted me from China and raised me, one Caucasian, the other multiracial, alongside a brother and sister adopted from Ethiopia. Not only are our ethnicities different, our beliefs are too.…
Diversity Statement Edi Hernandez In an ever growing college community that welcomes more and more diversity it is important to understand the different backgrounds and accept those differences in order to grow together. Diversity means being able to emphasize with someone and embrace that person for who they are and not judge but to broaden our understanding of what it means to live and experience life in all types of ways. In this position I will have to interact and hear a lot of different backgrounds from student that are seeking services from the TRiO SSS STEM programs on Aims’ campus.…

As a response to the CEO, I would point out the three diversity principles: affirmative action (AA), equal employment opportunity (EEO) and diversity initiative. To ease my CEO understanding of these three principles, I would demonstrate how these principles are different but all work and interact together. Affirmative action or AA aims to correct the past discrimination. As such, it breaks down visible and invisible obstacles so that every worker has the benefit of an equal break. Nonetheless, AA does not assure equal outcome since people with disability and minorities still facing discrimination in the workforce…
A consideration of diversity in policy-making should shift the current discourse of culture away from a deficit, behavioural change approach to a rights-based, structural determinant approach. Attention to diversity, thus, may support policy-makers in changing broader social processes and beliefs that presently constrain healthy public policy and maintain ethnic health inequities. There are two theories as to why Māori suffer from health inequalities; one being that Māori have inferior capabilities and the other being that Māori experience greater barriers than others to health. The first reflects a deficit approach, that is those with poorer health are somehow blameworthy for existing health disparities and the second reflects a social determinant…

From attending a high school with over 4,000 students to attending a university with tens of thousand of students, and I’ve learned that there is always something new that you can learn from people. Everyone thinks differently, and everyone has something to offer to one another. People always say think outside the box, not to be narrow-minded, but to be able to imagine what’s outside the box you need the ability to think differently. And the only way to think differently is to be exposed to the different ways that people perceive the world. A commitment to diversity means always to strive to view the world in numerous ways, to never assume something because you can't think differently, and to always try to expose yourself to all the different people that surround us.…
“American”, is defined as a citizen living in these United States of America, but that is only the beginning. An American could be called someone whose family has been in this land from the ice age and on. Or another person can call themselves American because they traveled to this country away from the struggles of their homeland. An American can be anybody who resides in North or South America, but the term is usually attributed to people living in the United States. When the average person is asked about Americans; the immediate thought is someone with light skin who has a partner of the opposite sex and a degree in a practical subject.…

It was seventh grade when I officially recognized what it was that made me feel so disconnected from the rest of my peers. This was during the time most kids were growing into their bodies and finding discomfort in how they viewed themselves. I fell into that category in a way many people can’t say they relate. The hatred I felt for my body sprung from something a bit different than the typical middle school bodily insecurities. I grew in the opposite direction from which I knew my gender was.…
Diversity is defined as variety, especially the inclusion of people of different race or culture, which happens to be the focus of most diversity initiatives. Diversity in the workplace began in the United States after the passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act when the US American industry began to see new categories of workers such as women and those with disabilities. In today’s world, the United States is considered a “melting pot” of ethnic cultures. Due to globalization, diversity has become a huge part of the workplace and therefore it is important for organizations to focus on trying to find ways to deal with having a diverse workforce. As quoted in the article Reflections on Diversity and Organizational development “diversity is an essential…
It include race, class ,ability, different learning conditions and styles, ethnicity, age, gender, sexual orientation, religion, nationality and other dimensions that make up the identity of the individual student and impact his or her learning experience. Thus, diversity needs to be taken seriously by educators. It is the only way to make sure that students of all backgrounds are not excluded or marginalized due to their unique needs and learning styles, but are instead supported by the education system and receive an education that helps them reach their fullest potential. Schools provide a social setting in which students can learn ways to deal with socio-cultural differences. (UNESCO, 2011) .We are living in the global age and a multi- cultural society where made up of people from various backgrounds and races so there are an increase in immigrants, international trades etc.…
