Following the Regular Education Initiative (REI), proposed in 1989, many controversial topics arose regarding the inclusion of students with disabilities into general education classrooms. However, under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), the least restrictive environment for children for disabilities should be in an educational setting “with other children who are not disabled, and special classes…occurs only when the nature or severity of the disability of a child is such that education in regular classes with the use of supplementary aids and services cannot be achieved satisfactorily” (US Department of Education, n.d). A successful inclusion can be measured by the students progress his/her IEP objectives but this needs to be monitored and modified as necessary. If the student is not making progress in a general classroom, then other resources or services need to be considered. Adequate resources need to be provided, to include paraprofessionals and materials, and services need to be flexible to meet the students’ needs. Another important factor is support from faculty. The team needs to communicate with one another, collaborate, set roles and responsibilities, and support one another in order to help the students thrive in a general classroom. The curriculum needs to be assessed to determine if it meets all the student’s needs and adaptations need to be made for EL students and students with disabilities (Vaughn, Schumm, and Forgan, 2015). With support and constant assessments of an individualized plan, EL students and students with disabilities will be able to benefit from a general education
