Job title: Director of Pharmacy
Job responsibilities According to Friedman and Kovner (2012), the Director of Pharmacy is in charge of efficiently operating the pharmacy of the hospital. This can include establishing the standard for performance, productivity, and quality in accordance with the state and federal regulatory agencies. The incumbent must maintain the quality of the chemicals used for all drugs in the hospital (“Director of Pharmacy,” n.d.). Directors must also supervise personnel and ensure employees go through proper training, orientation, and have performance standards and appraisals. Since it is an executive level job, the director will most likely work in an office and walk around the facility and may be exposed to contagious illnesses (“Director of Pharmacy,” n.d.). Directors must work long hours between breaks and be in contact with coworkers constantly (Pharmacare Services, n.d.). They will also have to remain in contact with the pharmacy staff to make sure everything runs smoothly.
Education and experience required (any special credentialing or licensing)
In order to become a Director of Pharmacy, one must be licensed in the state they decide to work in (Friedman & Kovner, 2012). A graduate degree is also highly recommended in the field of business administration or health care administration. In addition to a graduate degree, 5-7 years of clinical experience is required in a hospital (“Director of Pharmacy,” n.d.). Since this a high commitment career, proper planning should be considered before deciding going down this path.

According to Friedman and Kovner (2012), directors must possess “outstanding interpersonal skills including the ability to effectively communicate with persons both inside and outside the organization”. Furthermore, one must be able to plan, supervise, coordination based on the pharmacy’s operations. Directors must have excellent leadership and time management skills to be able to implement all these policies and procedures. In addition, being detail oriented and being ethical is a skill directors must have because they are dealing with drugs that can affect patient’s lives and manage people who work with them as well.
Employment outlook
The outlook for directors of pharmacy is deemed very positive compared to other jobs in the field. Based on Friedman and Kovner (2012), there will be an influx of openings due to the planned retirements of older directors and those who leave the job for other reasons. As mentioned before, since 5-7 years of experience is required, it is highly suggested that one find a working place that is enjoyable as it can be a long career so you want to surround yourself with positive coworkers.
