QUESTION: Explain how the Ash’arites and Mu’tazilites deviated with regard to the attributes of Allah and mention the correct Aqeeda thereof.
INTRODUCTION
Tawheed has 3 categories among which is ‘tawheed al Asma was Sifat’ or the names and attributes of Allah (swt). They were given to mankind by Allah's mercy, through Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and should be attributed to Allah(swt) the way it was originally revealed without rejecting or adding any new attributes neither comparing them to humans. This verse in surah al Baqarah gives evidence about Allah (swt) being able to talk:
“Among them are those to whom Allaah spoke.”
The mutazilites claimed that Allah (swt) speaks without sound and the Asharites claimed that they are not actually his words but his wish which is present within himself and not spoken! But speech is an attribute of the speaker and cannot be separated, hence they have deviated and the correct aqeedah is Allah (swt) speaks in a way which befits Him unlike how the humans speak.
Allaah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said:
“When Allaah, the Exalted, speaks revelation, the inhabitants of each heaven hear the clanging of a bell from heaven to heaven like a chain being dragged on Mount Safaa, and they swoon. They remain in that state until Gabriel comes to them.”
Allah (swt) Himself says in the Quran in surah Taaha when Prophet Musa came to the location:
“When he came there [a voice] called out to him [saying]: O Moses, indeed I am your Lord.”
Hence the attribute that Allah (swt) can speak cannot be rejected.
