The Railroad was not actually a railroad; it was series of safe houses that would aid runaway slaves. They would give them food, shelter, water, etc. The North was in agreement to keep the Under Ground railroad going, it helped free a lot slaves that were held by the south against their will. The South did not agree to this, they wanted justice. They regarded the slaves as their property and the North willingly helping them get away was wrong in the eyes of the southerners. Matters went even more downhill when a book called “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” came out. Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote the book about a fictional slave and what this man had to go through well under the watchful eye of the southerners. She got the idea from talking to former slaves who had runaway, when asked what they went through, she put the horrors on paper and formed a book. The North had no ill will toward the book. They believed that it’s just what people needed to see and read to believe that what was happening in the south was wrong. They hoped the book would open people’s eyes to the injustice of it. The south thought of the book as a disgrace, they proclaimed it gave false information on how the slaves were treated. It was a fictional character with a fictional story and they thought people should not read to much
