Difference Between Slavery And Slavery

A common theme in early human history all the way up to modern times has been labor. Two early ways humans covered the expenditure of labor were indentured servitude and slavery. Although they can be strikingly similar there are key differences. Family was a possibility in certain circumstances as an indentured servant while “Black as slaves were denied the right to family” (Buck 34). With this, relationships all together as indentured servants were possible, and it was prevalent. Although blacks were more mistreated than white servants it was less race biased as “Black and white worked together, fraternized together” (Zinn online Ch. 2). However slavery has no freedom in sight for the slaves where they are worked until death, or if they escape. Indentured servants also have certain benefits. Some of these are lodging, and food. Most importantly they can receive amenity after they have served the set amount of years decided between the master and servant. The lines between and indentured servant and slavery is blurred, but not as much as the difference between African and American slavery. There were 2 key differences between the two types of slavery discussed. African slavery was not any less cruel but the nature of American slavery, gives American slavery a stigma for being degrading. One key reasons is “the frenzy for limitless profit that comes from capitalistic agriculture” (Zinn online Ch. 2) Labor was needed, and to pump out the money need to feed the American economical machine there could not be anytime to stop. That includes time to make sure conditions were liveable, or care towards the slaves.
