Apart from his theological writings, Bonhoeffer was known for his staunch resistance to the Nazi tyranny, including vocal opposition to Hitler's euthanasia program and genocidal persecution of the Jews. Dietrich was arrested in April 1943 by the Gestapo (the German state secret police) and imprisoned at Tegel military prison for eighteen months. He was later moved to a Nazi concentration camp.
